Dr. Ángel Rivera Castro, MD

Graduated in 1989 from the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology in 1995 at the Puerto Rico’s Veterans Hospital. Currently, Dr. Rivera is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology and the Puerto Rico’s Ophthalmologists Medical Association. He has been a member of our medical faculty for more than 15 years, currently occupying the position of Medical Director of the Ophthalmology Department.

Dra. Nayda E. Vega Pérez, MD

Graduated in 1991 from the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology in 1995 at the Puerto Rico’s Veterans Hospital. Currently she is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology and the Puerto Rico’s Ophthalmologists Medical Association. Dr. Vega has been a member of our medical faculty for more than 15 years, currently occupying at the position of Secretary of the Medical Faculty.

Dra. Lilia I. Rivera Román, MD

Graduated in 1982 from the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology in 1983 at the Hospital of the City of San Juan, Puerto Rico and in 1988 was certified in the Cornea Subspecialty at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans. Dr. Rivera is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology and the Puerto Rico’s Ophthalmologists Medical Association. She has been a member of our medical faculty for more than 15 years, having served for several years as President of our Medical Faculty.

Dr. Armando L. Oliver Cruz, MD

Graduated in 1998 from the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Oliver completed his residency in Ophthalmology in 2002 in the program of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. In 2004 he completed a Subspecialty degree in Ocular Immunology and Uveitis at the Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medicine School in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2006 he completed a second Sub-specialty in Retina and Vitreous Humor Surgery at the University of Boston in Massachusetts. Currently, Dr. Oliver serves as Assistant Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Puerto Rico. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Puerto Rican Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Oliver is the author of numerous scientific manuscripts which have been presented at various international forums including the European Society of Retina and the Ophthalmological Society of Valencia. Dr. Oliver has been a member of our Medical Faculty for more than 5 years.

Dra. Sarah M. Acevedo Román, MD

Graduated in 2002 from the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Acevedo completed her residency in Ophthalmology in 2006 at the Puerto Rico’s Veterans Hospital and in 2009 was certified in Retina Subspecialty at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of the Harvard Medical School. Currently she is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology, the Puerto Rican Society of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Jaime E. Colón-Casasnovas, MD

Dr. Jaime E. Colom-Casasnovas graduated from Ponce School of Medicine in 2010 and completed his residency in Ophthalmology in 2014 at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. He is a certified member of the American Association of Ophthalmology. Dr. Colón has been a member of our Medical Faculty since 2014.

Dra. Ana C. Toro Ortiz, MD

Dr. Toro is a graduate of the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico, where after graduating as MD, made her specialty in Ophthalmology. In 2014 she completed her Subspecialty in Oculoplastic, becoming a member of the Instituto de Ojos Medical Faculty in 2014. Dr. Toro is a member of the American Association of Ophthalmology, the Puerto Rican Society of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Eileen Marrero Torres, OD

Graduated in 1991 from the Inter American University School of Optometry. Currently she serves as Clinical Instructor of Optometrists in residence who are referred by the Inter-American University School of Optometry. Dr. Marrero has served at the Instituto for more than 15 years.

Nylia M. Armstrong Badillo, OD

Graduated in 1992 from Stetson University in Florida where she completed a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Armstrong earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the School of Optometry of the Inter-American University in 1996. Subsequently, in 1998, she completed the examinations of the National Board of Optometry and was certified in this demanding discipline. Dr. Armstrong has provided services to our institution for more than 10 years.

Dra. Stefania Paniccia, OD, MS, FAAO

A graduate of Adelphi University in New York, where she completed her degree in Biology and a Masters in Bio-Chemistry. She graduated in 2013 from the School of Optometry at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, completed her residency in Primary Eye Care in 2014 and was also certified as Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Paniccia received her certification from the National Board of Optometry in 2013 and became a member of our Medical Faculty in 2014.

Dra. Roselyn E. Ramírez-Cruz, OD

Dr. Roselyn E. Ramirez-Cruz completed a Bachelor in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus in 2007 and graduated from the School of Optometry of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in 2012. She was certified by the National Board of Optometry in 2012 and became a member of our institution in 2013.

Dr. Pablo Velazquez, OD

Graduated in 1989 from the School of Optometry of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, where he earned his Doctor in Optometry degree. In 2011 he completed the requirements for his certification as Certified Optometry. Dr. Velazquez has served at the Instituto de Ojos for more than five years.

Dra. Astrid E. González Ramos, MD

Dra. Astrid E. González Ramos Oftalmóloga She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine of Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) in 2012. In 2013, she completed her training in Clinical Research at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, in Miami, Florida. In 2014, she became an Assistant Professor at UCC School of Medicine. Dr. González completed her residency in Ophthalmology in 2018 at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. She has been a member of our medical faculty since then as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist. She also serves as a Sub-Investigator at “Emanuelli Research Development,” conducting clinical research trials. She is member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Puerto Rican Society of Ophthalmology.
