Visual correction to simultaneously see from far and near has several options and treatment alternatives that meet the visual needs of each patient. In determining which option is more suitable for you, the health of your eyes, the quality of their vision, the nature of your work and in particular, your expectations for the outcome of the surgery, should be considered.

Instituto de Ojos offers surgeries using Laser LenSx, Intra-Lasik, KAMRA Inlay and multifocal lenses, combining according to your needs, those qualities of each procedure necessary to obtain greater accuracy in your vision.

Our staff is ready to provide you all the necessary information so that you, in coordination with our faculty, make a decision that is personalized and adjusted to your needs.

Combined surgery SIM-LASIK and KAMRA

This surgery combines near visual correction using KAMRA Inlay technology with far visual correction with IntraLASIK. Both procedures are performed simultaneously during the same surgical procedure. This combination of procedures is appropriate for people who have refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism and are 45 years or older, and because of their age, are suffering from presbyopia or difficulty to see up close.

How does it work?

First, the KAMRA Inlay surgery is performed to correct your near vision. An implant is placed in the middle layers of the cornea with a specialized laser. This implant is much smaller and thinner than a contact lens and consists of a small opaque plastic ring with an opening in the center that allows only focused light into your eye. The KAMRA ring is placed in your non-dominant eye allowing you to see up close, while maintaining your distance vision in both eyes.

Then, we will correct your distance refractive error with IntraLASIK surgery, which consists of two stages: one in which a bladeless separation is created from a thin layer of the cover of the cornea using a specialized laser. This separation will allow us to access the inside of the cornea where corrective treatment will take place in the second stage. Then, we will reconfigure the corneal topography according to the prescription that achieves the greatest and permanent visual acuity.

When these procedures are combined, the patient will regain his near, intermediate and far vision, with both eyes working together.

How do I know if I can have surgery?

Anyone who wants to know if he is a suitable candidate to stop using eyeglasses for near and far vision, should have a visual evaluation. At Instituto de Ojos we perform a complete evaluation that includes several tests. These are:

  • Refractive exam, reading glasses exam, far / near vision quality tests, intraocular pressure and elasticity of the cornea
  • Laser analysis of the fundus of the eye to determine the condition of the retina
  • Reading the thickness of the cornea, its contour maps and ocular surface status
  • Microscopic eye exam

The evaluation appointment for these tests lasts approximately two hours, including the orientation on the procedure, recovery and financing options.

How long does the surgery take and how it is?

The combined IntraLASIK and KAMRA Inlay procedures takes about 20 minutes, but the day of the surgery you should reserve an hour and bring a companion with you. The surgery is performed using topical anesthesia (eye drops) to guarantee that you don’t experience pain. Only a little pressure is felt when we place a plastic instrument with the shape of the eye that keeps it open and immobilized during the application of the two lasers that are used in each eye.

The recovery for both procedures is fast and will require the use of prescription eye drops. In addition, you will be issued dark eyeglasses to avoid glare when you are on the outside. You can return to work within 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

Will I notice the difference immediately?

At the end of surgery, you will be able to see with your eyes. Usually, most patients perceive their improvement as soon as they rise from the treatment table. Recovery starts from day one, but it is normal to have blurry vision and experience the sensation of a foreign body or straw in your eyes. This is caused by a mild corneal edema generated as part of the procedure. You may also experience a temporary dry eye worsening, requiring frequent use of eye lubricants.

These postoperative effects are normal and temporary. Usually they disappear gradually after several months after surgery. Distance vision usually recovers first and then progressively, near vision improves.

Should I take a leave from work?

You can return to work the following day, although you must reserve one hour for your first post op visit.

How much does the surgery cost? Do health insurance plans cover it?

The combined visual correction surgery is an elective procedure and it is not covered by health insurance plans. The total cost of each surgery, if performed separately is $ 5,585.00 but if performed simultaneously, the cost is reduced to $ 5,000 and it includes without additional charges, the evaluation and qualification appointment, where we will determine if you are a candidate. It also includes postoperative visits during the first 6 months. For an evaluation click here or call 787-769-2477.

Lensectomy refractive surgery – LenSX and ReSTOR lens

We all have a lens inside the eye, very similar to a camera. This lens is called crystalline and is the one that focuses the images on the retina of our eyes.

Another alternative to correct near vision problems, or presbyopia, is to surgically remove the natural lens that has begun to degrade its optical acuity as part of the involution process of dysfunction related to aging of the eye. Patients over age 55 who suffer from distance vision problems and presbyopia and wish to correct them in a single procedure, can opt for this surgery. The performance and precision achieved with this procedure allows restoring both, near and far vision, with the confidence and advantage that you will never suffer from cataract.

There are 3 stages that occur over time in the degradation of the natural crystalline lens of our eyes: the first occurs when you reach forty years of age, when stiffness of the lens occurs with a loss of flexibility, causing what is known as presbyopia. Patients with this condition will suffer from blurred near vision.

Then, when you reach between 50-70 years of age, a yellowish optic degradation of the lens occurs. It manifests with night vision problems and the need of additional light to read.

Finally, in people over seventy years, the lens loses transparency and develops opaqueness, a condition known as cataract. At this stage patients see blurred all the time.

How does it work?

In this surgery a multifocal lens that replaces the natural lens of each eye is placed using a specialized laser. The implant is made of acrylic and will last for the rest of your life. This lens offers a range of vision from near and far, extending your range of functional vision and freeing you from the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses.

How do I know if I can have surgery?

LenSx laser surgery with ReSTOR multifocal implant is indicated as an alternative when the patient suffers from presbyopia problems, with or without distance refractive errors and without the presence of cataracts. Candidates for this surgery are typically older than 45 years old. At Instituto de Ojos we perform a complete evaluation to detect cataracts. For an evaluation click here or call the 787-769-2477.

How long does the surgery take and how it is?

Instituto de Ojos has the most advanced technology for crystalline lens replacement surgery and intraocular multifocal lenses implant.

In this procedure cuts are made with the LenSx laser, which operates with unmatched precision to capture high-resolution images of your eyes, achieving a high precision surgery that cannot be reached in a traditional surgery. Then, the ReSTOR multifocal lens is placed to treat your refractive error and your presbyopia simultaneously in a single surgery.

With this surgery we correct your vision in both eyes, however, one eye is done first and the other eye the following week. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, but you must reserve the full day since we must perform the preadmission preoperative evaluation and prepare your eyes with eye drops before surgery. We recommend you rest after the procedure. You must bring a companion with you because you won’t be able to drive.

Will I notice the difference immediately?

Recovery begins to work immediately, but the first day you will have your eye covered by a protective eye guard. In addition, for several days you will use dark eyeglasses to avoid light when you are outside, eye lubricants and anti-inflammatory eye drops.

It is normal to have blurry vision during the first weeks. These postoperative effects are normal and temporary. They gradually disappear between two to eight (2-8 ) weeks after surgery.

Should I take a leave from work?

You can return to work two days after the surgery. You must reserve one hour for your first post op visit.

How much does the surgery cost? Do health insurance plans cover it?

When in the absence of lens opacification or presence of cataract, LenSx laser surgery with multifocal ReSTOR lens is considered an elective procedure and as such, it is not covered by health insurance plans, The cost is $3,000 and includes the initial evaluation and qualification appointment where we will determine if you are a candidate for surgery. It also includes postoperative visits during the first 6 months. For an evaluation click here or call the 787-769-2477.

Advanced Cataract Laser Surgery – LenSx and RESTOR Lens

To be able to enjoy good vision, the eye lens must be clear and transparent. Over the years, some people develop opacity in their lens, a condition known as cataract.

Cataracts can only be removed by surgery. There is no other treatment such as pills, vitamins, injections or supplements to correct a cataract.

How does it work?

In this surgery, a multifocal lens that replaces the natural lens of each eye is implanted using a specialized laser. The implant is made of acrylic and will last for the rest of your life. Currently, we use different kinds of implants and your surgeon will recommend the best lens implant for your eyes.

  • Monofocal implant – Corrects a single field of view, either distance or close, but not both. They provide an excellent quality of vision and are a good option for patients who do not mind using eyeglasses for certain activities.
  • Multifocal Premium implant – provide a continuous range of vision from near and far, extending the range of your functional vision. They free you from of the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
