The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends eye examinations in the following stages:

Babies (pediatric eye exams that can be performed by a pediatrician, a nurse, a primary care physician, an ophthalmologist).

  • Newly born
  • Before six months
  • Between six months and until the child is big enough to follow instructions and undergo an eye control

Children (pediatric eye exams that can be performed by a pediatrician, a nurse, a pediatric care physician, an ophthalmologist)

  • Between 3 and 4 years
  • Between 4 and 5 years
  • Every 1-2 years after 5 years of age

Adults (complete medical eye exam by an ophthalmologist)

  • Less than 40 years: every 5-10 years
  • Examination of eye diseases at the age of 40. Your ophthalmologist will tell you when to return for follow up exams according to your history and to what is detected in this exam.
  • Between 40 and 54 years: every 2-4 years
  • 55-64 years: every 1-3 years
  • At 65 years and every 1-2 years, or as recommended by your ophthalmologist
